Managing Your Studies: Independent Learning

Being an independent learner

An independent learner is someone who takes responsibility for their own learning and actively seeks out information, rather than relying solely on lecturers, textbooks, or other resources. Independent learners are self-motivated and curious, and they have a strong desire to learn and acquire new skills and knowledge.

Independent learners take charge of their own learning by setting goals, creating study plans, and managing their time effectively. They are able to identify their strengths and weaknesses and develop strategies to overcome obstacles they may encounter. They also use a variety of resources to help them learn, including books, online resources, and other people.

Overall, independent learners take ownership of their learning and are able to learn more efficiently and effectively because they are actively engaged in the process and are able to tailor their approach to their own learning needs.

To help you on your way to becoming an independent learner, you could use the self-reflective tool below to recognise areas of strengths and weaknesses and make a plan of action.
